# Carpathian Maps > Self-hosted maps and directions. A public vector map that any MapLibre client can draw, and a keyed HTTP API for walk, bike, drive and transit routes and isochrones. - Map files are public at https://maps.carpathian.ai/map and need no key. - `POST /v1/route` and `POST /v1/isochrone` need `Authorization: Bearer `. Call them from a backend; never ship the key to a browser or app. - The server never logs bodies, coordinates or query strings. - Directions cover Iowa (walk, bike and drive); Des Moines metro IA (transit on DART). A point outside them answers `422 No route was found.` ## Docs - [Overview](https://maps.carpathian.ai/docs/index.md): Carpathian Maps is self-hosted maps and directions. One server holds the map, the route engines and the key, so no third party sees where anyone is or where they are going. - [Connect](https://maps.carpathian.ai/docs/connect.md): Two things connect to Carpathian Maps: the map, which any browser or app draws from the public map files, and directions, which your backend asks for with the key. - [API reference](https://maps.carpathian.ai/docs/api.md): The directions API answers walk, bike, drive and transit routes and isochrones from your backend. ## Optional - [All pages in one file](https://maps.carpathian.ai/llms-full.txt): every page above, one after another - [Third-party notices](https://maps.carpathian.ai/notices): the licenses of the bundled libraries and the map data - [Source code](https://github.com/Carpathian-LLC/Carpathian-Maps): the server, install steps and operator console
